Truffles

Istrian hidden treasure

Istria’s forests are known for truffles, especially the highly prized white truffle (Tuber magnatum pico) and the increasingly common black truffle (Tuber melanosporum). These underground fungi thrive in the region’s dense oak and beech forests. Truffle hunting is an old tradition in Istria, with skilled hunters using trained dogs to locate this exceptional delicacy.

Istrian truffles are celebrated for their intense aroma and rich, earthy flavour, capable of transforming even the simplest dishes into a gourmet experience. They are often served with steaks, pasta, risotto and scrambled eggs, or incorporated into cheeses to add a luxurious touch. The white truffle season, which runs from September to January, is especially anticipated and attracts food lovers from around the world eager to taste this unique Istrian speciality.
